Pop-up uses recyclable plastic items as currency
In August 2019, Taiwan-based international trash and waste upcycler Miniwiz opened a pop-up in Sardinia, Italy, where plastic for recycling can be used as currency to buy items in-store, including tiles and lampshades.
Shoppers drop their plastic bottles, take-away drinks cups and shopping bags into a smart trashcan called Robin, which sorts plastic by type and assigns credits to be exchanged for the goods made in-store.
A Trashpresso machine cleans, dries and shreds the material into flakes, which are combined and heated to be molded into the new products.
